Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS bREW Renew?

  • Brew Renew partners with local breweries to remove their liquid byproducts. These organic byproducts are transported and applied to agricultural fields to improve soil quality and enhance plant growth. This reduces the strain on local sewer systems and benefits the farming community with a natural soil amendment.

  • The liquid Brew Renew collects from the breweries is called the trub. Trub is a German word meaning "cloudy" or "turbid" and, in brewing, refers to the sediment that forms at the bottom of a fermentation vessel. It is a byproduct of the brewing process containing unfermentable products such as proteins, fats, hops, and dead yeast.

  • Nutrient boost: Trub contains proteins and organic matter that can serve as a nutrient boost for soil microbes, which in turn benefits plant growth.

Improved soil health: When properly applied, composted or diluted, it can contribute to a healthier soil environment and increase the presence of existing beneficial microbes.

Increased plant growth and yield: Trub is a liquid source of nitrogen, phosphate and potash/ potassium. Given the amounts of these elements in the liquid, trub is classed as a agricultural mineral and not a classical fertilizer. Research suggests that beer by-products can accelerate plant growth and increase productivity in agricultural settings.

  • Smell: Trub smells strongly of beer. We have customers who love the smell and others who hate it. The smell can linger for a day or two, depending on the type of beer brewed and the number of passes applied to the field.

Alcohol content: Alcohol in trub can harm some beneficial soil microbes, which are essential to a healthy pasture ecosystem. Brew Renew monitors the alcohol content of every truck load and will not apply the Trub to fields if the alcohol content is too high.

Carbohydrate type: The simple carbohydrates in trub are not ideal for stimulating all types of plant growth and can lead to the wrong kind of growth. Be sure to let us know in advance if you plan to grow any specialty crops. Grass pastures and hay crops are fine for Trub application.

  • We test trub from each brewery we work with whenever a new beer is brewed. We also test as required by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

A typical Guaranteed Analysis is as follows:

    • Total Nitrogen (N) – 0.13% or 10.96 lbs / 1000gal

    • Available Phosphate (P2O5) – 0.07% or 5.9 lbs / 1000gal

    • Soluble Potash (K2O) – 0.05% or 4.22 lbs / 1000gal

    • Density 8.33 lbs/gal @68 deg F

WORKING WITH BREW RENEW

  • Check out our service area map on the area of service page of this website. Occasionally we will venture outside these boundaries but that is completely dependent on local breweries requesting our services in other areas. Feel free to contact us to get on the wait list for other areas with breweries such as the Sisters, Redmond and Sunriver regions.

  • As this is a high-volume agricultural amendment, we do have limitations on what properties we can service. Please review the following requirements before reaching out.

    • Distance: You must be within our service boundary. See the Area of service map. However feel free to reach out and get on the list for other areas we may service from time to time.

    • Entry Access: we require a minimum entry width of 12ft and a minimum clearance height of 12ft. Our trucks are 36ft long so tight turning entries may also restrict access. We also have load bearing requirements for bridge/ canal crossings.

    • Pasture Size: given a truck load is 4000 gallons and we cannot “split” loads, we are unable to service any pasture under 2 acres. in size

    • Pasture condition: Our trucks are quite heavy when loaded, we require the pasture to be dry prior to arrival. We will not service recently irrigated, flooded or boggy pastures as there is a high likelihood of the trucks becoming stuck and/or damaging your pasture.

    • Nonagricultural uses: We do not provide trub for nonagricultural uses.
